Queensland Government – Delivering a win for local cafes and restaurants
Minister for Employment and Small Business and Minister for Training and Skills Development
The Honourable Shannon Fentiman
The Palaszczuk government welcomes today’s announcement from Deliveroo that will assist local businesses who are doing it tough during COVID-19.
Minister for Employment and Small Business Shannon Fentiman welcomed the announcement and said Deliveroo will be removing commission fees for pick-up orders and offering lower commission rates for restaurants who provide their own delivery.
“This is a win for our Queensland restaurants and cafes who are relying heavily on takeaway and delivery right now,” Ms Fentiman said.
“We have been in discussions with the major platforms, industry bodies and unions to advocate for a fair deal for businesses.
“Deliveroo already offer one of the more completive commission rates and it’s great news for business owners as well as consumers.
“These new measures provide options for the consumer to make informed decisions so they can still support their eatery when they order through Deliveroo.”
Deliveroo have expanded their pickup services nationally and removed the commission fee. They have also dropped their commission rate to 5 per cent for Marketplace+ orders where the restaurant uses their own delivery service.
CEO of Deliveroo Australia Ed McManus said it was important that they are providing support for local businesses to stay open during the pandemic and had established a number of initiatives such as same day payments, contactless delivery, and promotional support which have already made a difference.
“At Deliveroo we are only as good as our restaurant partners; their success is our success,” Mr McManus said.
“We continue to look for ways to support our restaurant partners and following discussions with them we know this short-term relief on commissions we are announcing today for restaurant partners across Australia will assist them to continue to trade and to keep their teams employed.”
“The strong message that we want to send to the public is that the Australian restaurant sector is still open for business.
“Please continue to support your local restaurants – this is the time when we all need to come together as a community to support each other.”
The Minister said the government will continue discussions around the commission fees with delivery platforms, industry bodies and unions.
“We will continue to work with the delivery companies to ensure a fair deal for Queensland businesses,” the Minister said.
“This is a positive first step and will help keep doors open and Queenslanders in jobs.”
